September 2009
As required the Independent Review Panel prepared an Independent Review Report with recommendations to which the Code Administrator provided a Response Report. You are invited to comment on these two reports by emailing the Code Administrator by Wednesday, 7 October 2009 Close of Business.

August 2009
The Biometrics Institute Independent Code Review Panel invited from members, key stakeholders and the public during August 2009. More information was available in a Consultation Paper.
April - May 2009
The Biometrics Institute conducted a second survey of Members re the operation of the Code and presented the results at its 10th Biometrics Institute Australia Conference on the 28-29 May 2009.

The results from the Survey were presented at the 2008 Annual Biometrics Institute Australia Conference (29-30 May 2008, Sydney).
February 2008
The Biometrics Institute conducted a first survey of Members re the operation of the Code and presented the results at its 2008 Biometrics Institute Australia Conference in May 2008.
Background:
The Biometrics Institute started a review process of the Code in February 2008 with the establishment of a Privacy Committee and two Surveys to its Members. Further briefings and consultations have been held with regular updates from this website.
The Code was approved on 19 July 2006 and took effect on 1 September 2006. The Office’s Code Development Guidelines suggest that an independent review of the Code and its operations should occur once every three years. Section I. Review of the Code sets out a number of requirements that the Independent Code Review Panel must follow in reviewing the Code.
Who is responsible to arrange the review?
In this case, the Independent Code Review Panel is responsible to arrange the review.
Content of the review
The review will cover such matters as how well the Code is working including the number of complaints received (none to date) and the effectiveness of the operation of the Supplementary Biometrics Institute Privacy Principles.
The Independent Code Review Panel is aware that there have been a number of changes to the Privacy Act 1988 since the Code came into operation which impact on the National Privacy Principles (NPPs) although the changes to the NPPs themselves have been minor. It is also aware that the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has submitted its final report to the Australian Government following its inquiry into privacy.
Response to the Review
The Code administrator will prepare a response to the review of the Code. If the report suggests improvements to the Code or Code processes, the response will address how these recommendations (if any) should be handled.
Consultation with stakeholders
The Independent Code Review Panel has started a stakeholder consultation process that provides the public with an adequate opportunity to contribute in accordance with clause I.5 of the Code.
