18 - 22 June 2012 | University of Technology, Haymarket Campus, Sydney
The Biometrics Institute has confirmed June 2012 to run this Facial Comparison course led by Richard Vorder Bruegge, Forensic Examinor, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), USA.
**Please note, this course is open to Australian and New Zealand government employees only. **
Whilst automated facial recognition has made great strides in the last decade, no FR algorithms are accurate enough to remove the human element from the decision process. This course has been designed to prepare the human facial comparison analyst to make the most informed decision possible when confronted with a pair of faces and the challenge of determining whether the same person is depicted therein or not. The course will provide the student with a basic understanding of the human face - its anatomy and how it changes over time. It will also provide the student with an understanding of the forensic comparison process, including the history of facial comparison and the application of facial comparison in recent criminal cases. Legal issues related to facial comparison (in the US) will also be discussed. Finally, as new technologies continue to be developed, the processes used in facial comparison continue to evolve and this course will provide the students with some insight into the types of new tools that are being developed.
Pre-requisites:
Delegates are expected to have had some previous experience with patterned evidence comparison analysis, such as fingerprint's (latent or 10-print comparisons), questioned documents, footwear or tire impression evidence, or firearms/toolmarks. Individuals with training in forensic video analysis are also strong candidates. The delegates should also be familiar with Adobe Photoshop. There shall be a ‘Photoshop Fundamentals’ Course run over 2 days the week prior to this course that shall cover the skills needed in Photoshop to keep up in this course. This course is completely optional. You may download a full agenda of the ‘Photoshop Fundamentals Course’.
Eligibility: Strictly limited to Australian and New Zealand government employees only (full time and not on contract).
