Part 2 - Performance, 6 hour seminar
Biometrics Standards and Conformity Assessment Seminar:
Expert Seminar Presenter: Fernando Podio, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S, Department of Commerce
Conformity assessment activities form a vital link between standards (which define necessary characteristics or requirements for products) and the products themselves.[1][2]
Attend this seminar to gain an understanding of the concepts of conformity assessment and ongoing testing and conformity assessment activities related to biometric products and standards. Both end-users implementing or planning to deploy biometric-based verification and identification systems, as well as product and system developers can benefit from the information derived from the outcome of these activities. Learn and participate in discussions on the role and need for laboratory accreditation and validation / certification bodies for conformity assessment. Examples of ongoing activities will be provided.
In particular, the seminar will focus on one of the key elements of conformity assessment - conformance to biometric standards. The motivation for the development of, the content and status of biometric conformance testing methodology standard developments will be addressed. How conformance could impact other conformity assessment elements (e.g. interoperability, performance) will be discussed. The seminar will also address current developments of associated conformance test architectures and test suites designed to test implementations of biometric standards. Features and characteristics will be addressed. Demonstrations of their use to test implementations of these biometric standards will be provided.

Biometric Performance Seminar:
Expert Seminar Presenter: Patrick Grother, Computer Scientist, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce
The seminar will address a range of issues to do with biometric performance from definition, to measurement and impact. Divided into five parts, the seminar is directed at operational relevance. The content will include examples drawn from fingerprint, face, iris and speech tests but will be modality independent. The focus of this seminar is on technical testing rather than human factors /psych aspects (of operator and/or humans being enrolled/imaged) that must be tested in order to fully assess biometric system performance.
Overview of Topics:
- Fundamentals
- Performance Metrics + Measurement
- Biometrics Testing
- Thresholds
- Operational Relevance
