Introduction to Biometrics Short-Course Europe

This 2-day, 16-hour course is designed to present a short overview of the primary issues in automated human recognition, also known as “Biometrics”. The course is designed for persons looking for a quick introduction to the history, fundamentals, standards, performance capabilities and case studies of biometric systems, with a focus on fingerprint, face and iris recognition. Although materials are of a technical nature, mathematical development is avoided in favour of a qualitative description of these systems and their fundamentals.
This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of high quality training in application of biometrics in Europe. Students wishing a more in-depth look at the algorithmic approaches employed over a broader set of biometric technologies are encouraged to attend the 4-day Intensive course given regularly by the Biometrics Institute.
Topics to be covered over 16 hours:
- Hours 1-4: History and Fundamentals
- Hours 5-10: Standards and Technologies for Fingerprinting, Face and Iris
- Hours 10-16: Test Results and Case Studies
About the Facilitator:
Dr. Jim Wayman is a research administrator in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at San Jose State University. He received the Ph.D. degree in engineering in 1980 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has worked continuously in the field of automated human recognition since 1984. In the 1980s, under contract to the U.S. Department of Defense, he invented and developed a biometric authentication technology based on the acoustic resonances of the human head. He joined San Jose State University in 1995 to direct the Biometric Identification Research Program, serving as Director of the U.S. National Biometric Test Center from 1997-2000. He is co-editor of J.Wayman, A. Jain, D. Maltoni and D.Maio (eds) Biometric Systems (Springer, London, 2005), a Fellow of the British Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers, a Principal UK Expert (PUKE) of the British Standards Institution (BSI) national body to the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC37 standards committee, the editor of ISO/IEC 19794-13 standard on voice data format, editor of the ANSI/NIST Type-11 "Voice Data Record", a founding member of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic and Investigatory Speaker Recognition, and the former editor of the 19794-3 Finger Pattern Spectral Data Format. He represents BSI on the JTC1 Information Technology Vocabulary Maintenance Team. He has previously served as a member of the U.S. National Academies of Science/National Research Council (NRC) "Whither Biometrics?" and "Authentication Technologies and their Implications for Privacy" committees and served for 4 years on the NRC Panel on Information Technology. He is a technical assessor for the National Institute of Standards and Technology "National Voluntary Laboratory Assessment Program", holds 4 patents in speech processing, has served as a paid advisor on automated human recognition to 11 national governments and is currently an IEEE "Distinguished Lecturer".
