Mission

The mission of the Biometrics Institute is to be an international forum for biometric users and other interested parties and to facilitate the responsible use of biometrics.

In order to achieve this mission, the goals of the Biometrics Institute are:

  • To promote the responsible and ethical use of biometrics, including due consideration to privacy concerns
  • To provide a forum for discussion about biometrics between members, potential users and vendors
  • To educate and inform members, business and the community
  • To facilitate the development and awareness of standards, benchmarks and test regimes for the industry
  • To provide policy input to governments in partnership with members and key stakeholders
  • To encourage appropriate research and development of biometrics
  • To promote the security and integrity of biometric systems and programmes

Implicit in Biometrics Institute's mission statement is the need to protect consumer personal data. This is why the Biometrics Institute has developed a Biometrics Privacy Charter and other guiding documents for its members in regarding to biometrics, privacy and data protection.
