The Biometrics Institute holds its first conference in Australia which has become the leading event in the Asia-Pacific region for biometrics.
The mission of the Institute is to promote the responsible and ethical use of Biometrics and Biometric Analytics as an independent and impartial international forum for Biometric users and other interested parties
In order to achieve this mission, the goals of the Biometrics Institute are:
- To develop thought-leadership and guidance for the responsible use of Biometrics, using the input of experts
- To facilitate knowledge-transfer to members, prospects, key stakeholders and the public
- To act as a connector for the global Biometrics industry including users, suppliers, academics, regulators and privacy advocates
The Biometrics Institute was founded in 2001 and represents a unique multi-stakeholder community spreading across the globe.

The Biometrics Institute holds its first conference in New Zealand expanding its engagement to a new region.

The Biometrics Institute Privacy Code – a first of its kind in the world – was registered with the Australian Privacy Commission and becomes part of Australian Privacy Legislation. The Code was converted into a universal Privacy Guideline in 2011 and is available to members.

The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate and the Office of Counter-Terrorism launch a Compendium for recommended practices for the use of biometrics in counter-terrorism in partnership with the Biometrics Institute at the UN HQ in New York City.

The Biometrics Institute launches the UK Showcase event which in 2014 merged with Biometrics Show to become the Biometrics Congress held annually in October in London. The Biometrics Congress has become the must-attend event for anyone with an interest in biometrics.
