The report explores the balance between digital identity and physical authenticity
The Biometrics Institute is pleased to present its 2026 Silver Jubilee Concepts and Solutions Report – Biometrics: Keeping it Real. With the rapid expansion of generative AI and synthetic media, this year’s collection of insights explores how the industry is prioritising authenticity and transparency. The report examines the essential role of biometrics in verifying who is real and ensuring that digital identity remains anchored to reliable reference data.

Expert submissions highlight how robust controls and clearly defined governance are creating a vital pathway to trusted identity. By focusing on these foundations, our members are working to maintain public confidence and ensure these systems serve the public interest in an increasingly artificial landscape.
With 31 expert submissions from our diverse supplier membership, the report provides a comprehensive overview of the technologies and ethical frameworks shaping our world. This year’s contributions reflect a shared commitment to the Institute’s Good Practice tools, moving beyond technical capability to address the accountability and transparency required to sustain public trust.
The report is categorised into five key themes, reflecting the concerns and solutions of our biometric community:
- Deepfakes and synthetic media: Strategies for detecting AI-generated fraud and maintaining the integrity of digital identity in an increasingly virtual world
- Border management and travel: The evolution of seamless travel and the drive toward frictionless and secure journeys
- Remote identity and onboarding: Best practices for secure, remote verification and the scaling of reusable digital identities
- Ethics, governance, and inclusion: Navigating the distinction between identification and verification, age assurance, and ensuring systems work equitably for all
- Next-generation security: Exploring multimodal trends including palm and behavioural biometrics to stay ahead of evolving threats
Keeping it Real serves as a roadmap for the future for organisations navigating the complexities of remote onboarding, biometric consent, and the high-security requirements of a digital-first society. It provides the necessary guidance to ensure that as biometric applications expand, they do so as a vital safeguard for inclusion and safety globally.
The Biometrics Institute does not endorse any of the submissions in the report but is sharing them for information purposes and to help generate discussion.
