ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This half-day workshop, led by an international subject matter expert, will dive into the topic of Facial Recognition Performance.
The workshop will give a broad look at the current state of the art in face recognition, touching on a wide range of technical topics that are usually considered when planning and deploying a face-based recognition system. The session will be organised into four segments:
- Limits of performance: The session will include a detailed look at the eight tracks of NIST’s Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) highlighting: The motivation for, and results from, the recent expansion of the one-to-many face identification tests; the role of 1:1 tests, new results on distinguishing twins; the drive to assess quality and how well that works. This section will start with material on the latest algorithmic capability in one-to-many use cases, limits of capability, scalability, subject ageing, speed and resource consumption, and the effects of a broad range of subject- and imaging-specific aspects of image quality on recognition, why thresholds are important and can increase, and joint face-plus-iris operation. The session will additionally discuss the latest information on the extent to which demographic variability has been addressed, what matters when comparing algorithms, why thresholds can or should increase, testing standards, recent research, including state of the art, causal factors, what’s important and what’s not, implications for search applications, mitigations, recent research, goals for that research, and advances in testing and measurement.
- Attack detection and mitigation: The section will cover MAD, PAD, IAD, respectively morph, presentation, and injection attack detection. The presentation will cover applications and security contexts, including the role of documents and their security, and the new use of biometrics on QR and related codes. The session will include information on attack detection performance, and a look at the emerging and revised standards in this area. This section will also cover the deepfake landscape and what mitigations exist and are needed.
- Age assurance: The session will summarise the wider field of age assurance then do a deeper dive into the role and capability of face-based age estimation and verification, inheriting content produced under NIST’s Face Analysis Technology Evaluation (FATE) programme.
- Gaps, risks, what follows: This segment will include material on satellite topics that are necessary for an in-context view of face recognition in applications: human vs. machine performance, absolute human performance, systems vs. algorithms, privacy technologies, topical research areas, and remaining gaps and inabilities. We will also tour new standards including demographic testing, relaxed face photography, operational testing, synthetic images, and public area systems under EU AI law.
WORKSHOP PRESENTER
Patrick Grother is a scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology responsible for biometric standards and testing. He leads the IREX, FRTE, FATE and FIVE evaluations of iris and face recognition technologies that support biometrics in national scale identity management. He co-chairs NIST’s International Face Performance Conference on measurement, metrics and certification. Patrick has received US Department of Commerce Gold Medals on three occasions, for work on biometrics in border control, for contributions to the PIV credential, and for work defining and quantifying demographic effects in biometrics. Patrick assists a number of US Government agencies on research, development and evaluation. Since 2018 he has served as chair of the SC37 committee on Biometrics and is editor of five ISO standards there. He received the IEC 1906 Award in 2009 and the ANSI Lohse IT Medal in 2013.
