Through a series of short presentations using case studies and real-life examples, attendees will benefit from the experience of industry peers and leading experts, arming attendees with tools and strategies to help their businesses thrive, give confidence to their customers and work towards better identity systems.
Expert Insights on the State of Biometrics
Biometrics have moved from a promising idea to something used passively, everywhere, every day. The next 25 years will be defined not by whether the technology works, but by whether we govern it responsibly.
The State of Biometrics Report is published annually and identifies key themes that the Institute and its members closely monitor. Members are invited to present their own viewpoints and insights on the topics covered in the report which include:
- Maturity of collection practices – Biometrics are now potentially everywhere – collected passively and continuously. From an unaware CCTV pass to a deliberate airport check, “collection” spans a spectrum of intention. It drives real efficiency and security benefits, and we see significant improvements in maturity for the traditional users.
- Big brotherhoods or cohesive communities? Institutions and communities alike must now decide whether, when and how to deploy biometric technology to solve shared problems – and who gets to make that call
- Human in the loop v2.0 – In a world of deepfakes, agentic AI and digital identities, technology does not remove the human from biometric decisions—it changes the human’s role. The challenge is no longer simply matching a face to a person but determining whether there is a real person there at all, being able to explain how we know, and understanding AI’s potential role in applications for identity verification.
- Biometrics as the trust multiplier – Trust is key to driving interoperability and uptake, the catalyst that moves digital identity into the global arena. Biometrics alone doesn’t deliver all that, but biometrics is the critical mechanism for establishing the trust that digital identity depends on.
