Biometrics in Use Signage

Biometrics in Use facial recognition signage

What is it?

This standardised signage is a proactive initiative by the Biometrics Institute to facilitate informed notice in publicly accessible spaces. Recognising the complexities of managing consent, the Institute’s members proposed a consistent signal to ensure the public can rely on a familiar graphic wherever biometric usage occurs.

The design employs a familiar surveillance camera icon – since most public biometrics are captured via camera – to ensure even those who do not speak the local language are aware of the system’s presence. This is supported by clear text to provide transparency.

After considering various alternatives, Biometrics Institute members selected this signage as their preferred choice for fostering a consistent global approach.

What are the benefits?

Implementing standardised signage allows organisations to move beyond reactive governance and adopt a policy-first approach. Key benefits include:

  • Building trust: Clear communication prevents the oversights that erode public confidence
  • Universal clarity: Icons ensure accessibility for international visitors or those with language barriers
  • Regulatory alignment: The signage acts as a physical manifestation of the Institute’s Three Laws of Biometrics and Good Practice Framework.
  • Operational consistency: A single, recognisable graphic provides a professional benchmark for the industry

        Who updates it?

The Biometrics Institute maintains and updates the signage. As an independent, multi-stakeholder organisation, the Institute ensures that the signage evolves based on demand, technological shifts, and emerging regulatory requirements.
